Brief History of The Event
The Tour de Kashmir is an annual bicycle race primarily held in Kashmir, with intent to showcase Kashmir as best Cycling tour destination across the Country. The race, inspired by the world famous cycling tour event Tour-de- France, was first organized in year 2000 with the aim to give some tough competitive event to State cyclists to showcase their finesse.
It is currently run by the J&K Sports Development Association. The race has been held annually since its first edition in 2000 except for 2008 and 2010 when it could not be held due to disturbances in the Valley.
As the Tour gained prominence and popularity the route for the race has been lengthened and its reach began to extend around the State. Participation expanded from a primarily few Valley Cyclists to riders from all over the State.
Currently, Tour de Kashmir doesn’t need any sanction from the UCI or Indian Cycling Federation as it is purely a prize money event and not a qualifying event for Olympics or Nationals.
Traditionally, the race is usually held in the month of July exception being 2012 event when it was held in October.
In the previous editions, the race was held from JK Bank Corporate headquarters Srinagar to Pahalgam covering a total distance of 100 kilometres. However, 2012 the course was changed from Srinagar to Gulmarg. The route was changed with the aim to make it a multi-stage event on the lines of its parent event Tour de France.
After 11 successful seasons, the organisers are planning to expanding it into a five stage event involving continuous five days of competitive racing covering most of the known tourist destinations of the Valley.
